Caution - insects!
What dangers lie in wait for us in plant foods?
The first danger that lies in wait for us in plant products, both fresh and dry, and even canned, is the presence of worms and insects, even the smallest ones (which the Torah strictly forbids).
Therefore, all fruits, vegetables, cereals, even spices must be carefully checked before eating, and flour must be sieved through a very fine sieve.
The main difficulty is knowing what to look for, where to look and how. As a rule, insects and worms living on greenery are camouflaged, which makes them difficult to detect.
The verification method depends on the type of plant. Leafy vegetables such as cabbage should be checked sheet by sheet. Greens (lettuce, parsley, dill, etc.) are soaked in a weak solution of salt, vinegar for 10-15 minutes, then washed under a strong stream of tap water and carefully examined. It is possible to detect a worm inside a date only when the fruit is examined in a light against the sun or a strong lamp. Beans and other legumes are first soaked for several hours and then checked by discarding any peas that have holes or brown (black) spots that penetrate the skin.
